What kind of house can you get in McKinney, Texas?

Have you ever driven through a neighborhood and wondered how much the houses cost, or if you could afford to live there? I do this all the time when I visit other states. Whenever I go to California and see tiny beach cottages, I think about how much more house we can get for our money in Texas. With McKinney consistently being voted one of the best cities in the United States to live and work in, I bet a lot of people are curious about the prices of our homes. I thought it would be fun to do a snap shot of what size and style of home you can get here, in a variety of price ranges. From small, charming cottages in historic downtown McKinney, to sprawling Mediterranean estates on several acres of land, McKinney has something in nearly every budget and style. The pictures I’m posting are of actual homes that are currently on the market as of May 2019.

It’s getting harder and harder to find a home for under $250k, and the homes in this price range typically sell fast! There are a few pocket neighborhoods in this price range that I really like. You can find some great homes really close to historic McKinney that were built around the 1960’s. These homes are being snapped up and remodeled and the neighborhoods are undergoing a serious regentrification . For under $250K you’re typically looking at a 1000-2000 square foot single story, 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home.

This is a sweet spot for houses in McKinney and they also tend to sell fast. For $250K-$350K you can get a a 2000-3000 square foot, 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom home in a great school district. In my search I also found a 500 SF barndominium on 2 acres!

From $350K to $450K most of the houses will be 2 story brick homes. These homes range from 2500-3500 square feet and are usually 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom. The neighborhoods usually have an HOA and the school districts are highly rated.

When we move up to the $450K – $550K price range, the lots get larger and often times the homes will have a pool. I found a handful of homes in this price range on lots that were over an acre! The homes are usually 3000-4000 square feet, 4 bedroom, 3 1/2 bathroom.

Similar in both lot size and square footage to homes in the $450k- $550k price range, homes in the $550K – $650K price range will have luxury finish out and be in some of the most desired neighborhoods in McKinney. In this price range I also found a gorgeous Georgian style colonial in historic downtown McKinney and I found a cozy ranch style home on 24 acres!

Every thing is bigger in Texas and that’s what you’ll find in this price range. From large country estates on several acres, to 8000 square foot homes centrally located in town, to lovingly restored gems in the historic neighborhood – you can definitely find your dream home in $750K – $1,000,000 price range.

Sprawling country estates, gated entrances, top of the line luxury finish out – everything you’d expect to find in a Dallas luxury home but with a lot more land and in a city that gives you that small town feel!  If you think homes in Texas are like the Southfork Ranch from the hit show Dallas, you aren’t far off!
